In the past few years, numerous fire incidents have occurred across China's logistics sector, highlighting serious safety concerns. On March 8, 2011, at 2:42 AM, a fire broke out in a warehouse at Shandong Baihe Logistics Center, where items such as plates, decoration materials, and clothing were stored. The Jinan Fire Department responded quickly, sending 41 fire trucks and over 100 personnel to control a fire that spread across 7,000 square meters. Another incident took place on May 3, 2011, when a fire erupted at a logistics center near Lanzhou, Gansu Province, destroying around 5,000 refrigerators and freezers. In Guangzhou, on July 22, 2011, a large-scale fire hit Taiheyi Logistics Park, burning thousands of appliances and causing millions in losses. These incidents show that with the rapid development of the logistics industry, warehouses are becoming larger, more complex, and increasingly risky.
Logistics companies can be broadly categorized into two types: storage-based and transit-based. Storage facilities typically house large quantities of goods, leading to high fire loads and limited personnel movement. Transit centers, on the other hand, involve frequent movement of people, vehicles, and goods, making management more challenging. Both types face unique fire risks due to their operational nature.
In Changshu, Suzhou, the logistics industry is mainly focused on warehousing, with most materials being food, household appliances, and daily necessities. Warehouses are concentrated in areas like the Clothing City and Yanjiang Development Zone. However, many of these facilities suffer from outdated fire protection systems, poor building structures, and unsafe storage practices. Some buildings originally designed for low-risk materials now store higher-risk items, leading to increased fire hazards. Additionally, the lack of proper fire exits and smoke evacuation systems makes it harder to manage fires once they occur.
Transit logistics also faces significant challenges. Many sites are located in remote areas with limited access to fire services. Personnel density is high, and improper storage of flammable materials increases fire risks. Poor layout and unregulated stacking often block emergency routes, while some warehouses even have "three-in-one" conditions—combining living, working, and storage spaces—which are highly dangerous.
To address these issues, comprehensive fire prevention measures must be implemented. Planning and construction should prioritize fire safety, ensuring that buildings meet modern standards. Responsibility must be clearly assigned, with regular training and drills to improve staff awareness. Daily supervision by fire departments is essential, along with collaboration between different agencies. During fires, quick response, accurate reconnaissance, and effective tactics are crucial to minimizing damage and protecting lives.
Overall, the logistics industry must adopt a proactive approach to fire safety, combining improved infrastructure, strict regulations, and continuous education to prevent future disasters.
