ON Semiconductor pushes energy efficient CABC mode energy efficient charge pump LED driver

ON Semiconductor, the premier supplier of high-performance silicon solutions for energy-efficient electronics, introduces the 6-channel, energy-efficient Quad-Mode LED driver, the CAT3649, for the latest smartphones and other consumer handheld applications such as digital cameras and portable media playback (PMP). This Quad-Mode architecture with Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) ensures market-leading energy efficiency for LED backlight applications that use only external capacitors.

The energy-efficient LED driver CAT3649 offers a total of four charge pump modes (1x, 1.33x, 1.5x and 2x) instead of the conventional 3-mode; making it stand out in the market. Compared to traditional charge pump LED drivers that operate 1.5 times, the CAT3649's 1.33x mode boosts energy efficiency by up to 10%, enabling handheld devices with this device to significantly extend battery life. This Quad-Mode fractional charge pump supports a wide input voltage range from 2.4 V to 5.5 V. The LED current can be adjusted in 32 linear increments of analog dimming via a 1-wire interface, or it can be further adjusted by PWM. The PWM dimming control is compatible with the CABC function at PWM signal frequencies from 100 Hz to 200 kHz.
