The new assessment standard for LED product safety

When developing and designing a new LED Lighting product, companies should consider factors such as electric shock, fire, and physical hazards that affect safety. A few days ago, UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc), a US product safety certification and standard safety organization, has begun to develop a series of LED product safety assessment standards.

At the end of January 2010, UL released the new standard UL8750, a draft for the evaluation of lamps and lanterns. This standard is used to evaluate the safety performance of LED products. At present, the entire lamp product is still based on the existing standards for lamps and lanterns.

In addition, UL1598 is also used to evaluate the safety performance of the entire lamp. Similarly, for portable luminaires using LEDs as light sources, UL8750 and UL153 are also used for product safety evaluation.

The UL Standards Technical Panel STP-StandardTechnicalPanEL will draft and publish a suitable LED American National Standard (ANSI Standard) based on the aforementioned draft to be used to assess LED luminaires sold in North America.
