Amit Singh, Deputy Director of Google Operations: Daily VR needs have surfaced but VR still needs to be more social

On November 8, 2017, Google made a significant move in the virtual reality space by launching the Daydream VR headset. This innovative device allows users to simply insert their smartphone and step into an immersive digital world. However, despite these advancements, Amit Singh, who was then the deputy director of Google's virtual reality business, acknowledged that there are still challenges to overcome. At a global networking summit held in Lisbon, Portugal, Singh highlighted one of the key issues facing VR: "Many people have mentioned that a major barrier is that virtual reality is still too isolated. It tends to be a solitary experience, which limits its broader appeal." But Singh remained optimistic, stating, "I believe there's a way forward. We've introduced features like allowing Daydream users to watch YouTube videos with friends or stream their VR experiences on TV through ChromeCast. This helps bring others into the experience, making it more inclusive. However, for VR to truly become mainstream, it needs to evolve into a more social platform." When asked how to encourage regular use of VR, Singh pointed out that the demand for daily VR experiences is growing. He explained, "I wouldn't say the demand is huge yet, but it's emerging. What we need is content that’s engaging enough to keep people coming back. Recently, we launched a VR video series with Vogue, where users can explore a virtual closet full of fashion content every day. My daughter, who isn’t really into games or tech, enjoys it for five minutes a day. That’s exactly the kind of engagement we're aiming for—something simple, relatable, and accessible." This approach shows that Google is not just focused on pushing technology forward, but also on creating meaningful, everyday experiences that resonate with a wider audience. As VR continues to develop, the emphasis on social interaction and daily usability will likely play a crucial role in its long-term success.
