Cree's EasyWhite product simplifies LED design and improves color consistency

High-tech LED compiled December 14 news, the LED manufacturer launched the EasyWhiteTM series, which means that the product simplifies the LED system design and improves the color consistency between the LEDs.

Cree MC-E

EasyWhiteTM Multi-core XLamp® MC-E LED for Cree. The bin offers 3500 K, 3000 K and 2700 K. It is 75% smaller than the ANSI C78.377 standard color temperature range.

“We listen to our customers' needs and we want to get a more stable color point, especially for warm white and neutral white lighting applications,” said Paul Thieken, director of LED components marketing at Cree.

“Our goal is to improve the color temperature consistency of the product in all applications. EasyWhite bin reduces manufacturing complexity and inventory requirements. Now customers can buy LEDs based on CCT and light output like a light bulb.”

It is currently not possible to produce LEDs with a high uniformity of specific color temperature at low cost. The main technology lies in the wavelength control of the blue LED and the coating process of the phosphor. Grading is required to classify the color temperature.

EasyWhite bins

In an ideal state, LED manufacturers are accustomed to using the entire range of white LED output in all bins. However, many lighting customers need to purchase chips with specific color temperature and consistency to ensure that there is no significant difference in color temperature between lamps.

Customers may mix multiple bin LEDs to maintain color point consistency. But these can only be used in applications that require multiple LEDs. It also adds to the complexity of manufacturing, more inventory, more storage space and a complex combination.

In Cree's MC-E packaged chip, a four-core color mixing method is used. The four white LED chips were picked and packaged by Cree. Therefore, the result of the white light output can just meet the requirements. The resulting color temperature range is much smaller than the ANSI-specified standard (see chart). This new bin uses a 4th-order MacAdam ellipse, not the seventh order specified by ANSI. Thieken said that in the future, a narrow second or first-order product will be launched.
