It is predicted that global LED chips will be in short supply in 2010


According to foreign media reports, the Taiwanese industry expects that with the further popularization of LED TVs and LED notebook computers, LED chips will be in short supply in 2010.

The industry expects that global LED TV sales will reach 15 million units this year, accounting for 10% of total flat-panel TV sales. Based on this figure, the monthly demand for LED chips for LED TVs may reach 1.2 billion.

Some well-known TV manufacturers even expect LED TV sales to reach 30 million units this year, which will further expand the market demand for LED chips. In addition, as for the entire notebook market, the share of LED notebooks is expected to increase from 50% this year to 80%.

Taiwan's LED chip maker Epistar said that the shortage of LED chips will continue until 2012, the company said it plans to increase its LED chip capacity by 40% next year. Another LED chip maker Formosa Epitaxy is also planning next year. The total number of MOCVD machines has been increased to 50, and the supply of global LED chips will continue to be tight next year.
