The earnings report for the second quarter of 2017 from Kopin Corporation, a U.S.-based technology firm with a 30-year legacy, highlights an impressive 36% year-over-year increase in revenue, reaching $5.9 million. Kopin anticipates that the second half of this year will see revenues surpassing 70% of those recorded in the first half. Known for its strong presence in AR/VR and wearable computing solutions, Kopin has long been a trusted supplier to the U.S. military, which significantly contributed to their robust Q2 performance.
Notably, Kopin supplies critical components for several AR/VR systems utilized by the U.S. military, including the F-35 fighter jet pilot helmets, Weapon Sights Programs series, armored vehicle simulation VR optics, and training helmets. These systems remain in high demand and are expected to secure additional orders in the coming year. Beyond military applications, Kopin is expanding its reach into enterprise AR/VR solutions, evident in products like the Scott Safety firefighter helmet and Vuzix M300, which prominently feature Kopin's technology.
In a recent quarterly conference, CEO Dr. John CC Fan announced plans to launch five new helmets in the second half of the year, each incorporating key Kopin components. Three of these helmets cater to enterprise needs, reflecting the growing recognition of smart helmets in commercial sectors. Dr. Fan expressed optimism about the rapid growth anticipated in enterprise AR/VR applications over the next few years. The remaining two helmets target consumers, one of which will incorporate Kopin's innovative light-emitting OLED microdisplay technology. This technology debuted at CES earlier this year with a 2K x 2K resolution display.
Kopin has fostered a unique supply chain model through partnerships with Chinese firms. By early 2018, Kopin and its partners plan to commence mass production of light-emitting OLED displays for consumer smart headsets. In the long term, Kopin has formed a joint venture with BOE and Northern Audulle of Yunnan to build the world's largest silicon-based light-emitting OLED manufacturing hub in Kunming, Yunnan, aiming for mass production within two years.
Kopin's proprietary smart glasses, SOLOSM, garnered positive feedback from users during initial trials. Following user suggestions, the enhanced SOLOSTM version is being produced by Goer Optical in China and is expected to hit the market in a few months. Additionally, Kopin's patented WhisperTM voice interface technology is set to feature in four out of five helmets launching later this year. WhisperTM offers superior noise cancellation and sound clarity, capable of recognizing both near-field and far-field audio inputs.
While the journey of groundbreaking technologies often follows a winding path—initially marked by innovation, followed by consolidation and mergers—Kopin has strategically focused on core competencies such as microdisplays, optical systems, and WhisperTM. These innovations have positioned Kopin as a leader in AR/VR, particularly in military and enterprise markets, with increasing consumer adoption on the horizon. From the outset, Kopin recognized voice technology as pivotal for wearable devices, a perspective now validated by market trends.
