**Application Range of Infrared Thermometer** 1. This method is suitable for preparing asphalt mixture test pieces using either the standard compaction method or the large compaction method, and it is used to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures in a laboratory setting. 2. The standard compaction method is commonly applied for tests such as the Marshall test and the indirect tensile test (split method). It is typically used for molding cylindrical test pieces with dimensions of Φ101.6mm × 63.5mm. On the other hand, the large compaction method is used for producing larger cylindrical specimens with dimensions of Φ152.4mm × 95.3mm. 3. The specifications of mineral materials and the number of test pieces must comply with the following requirements: 3.1 When designing the mix ratio of asphalt mixtures or manually preparing them in the lab, the size of the test piece should have a diameter not less than the nominal maximum particle size of the aggregate. The thickness should be at least 1–1.5 times the nominal maximum particle size. For a test piece with a diameter of 101.6mm, the nominal maximum particle size of the aggregate should not exceed 26.5mm. For coarse-grained asphalt mixtures with particle sizes larger than 26.5mm, equal amounts of 13.2–26.5mm aggregates can be used as a replacement (replacement method). Alternatively, larger cylindrical specimens with a diameter of Φ152.4mm may also be used. These large cylindrical specimens are appropriate for aggregates with a nominal maximum particle size up to 37.5mm. In the lab, the number of test pieces should generally be less than 4, but can be increased to 5–6 if necessary. 3.2 For finished samples of asphalt mixtures collected from mixing plants or construction sites, if the test piece has a diameter of 101.6mm, the sampling method and the number of test pieces should be selected based on the following guidelines: - If the nominal maximum particle size of the aggregate is ≤ 26.5mm, direct sampling (direct method) can be used. Usually, 4 test pieces are prepared. - If the nominal maximum particle size is > 26.5mm but ≤ 31.5mm, screening (screening method) should be performed. The number of test pieces remains at 4. However, if the direct method is used, the number should be increased to 6. - If the nominal maximum particle size exceeds 31.5mm, the screening method must be applied. The sieve size is 26.5mm, and the set of test pieces still consists of 4 pieces. **Instruments and Materials** - **Standard Compactor**: Consists of a hammer, a flat circular compaction head with a diameter of Φ98.5mm, and a guide bar with a handle. The hammer can be lifted manually or mechanically and falls freely from a height of 457.2mm ± 1.5mm. The standard compaction hammer weighs 4536g ± 9g. - **Large-Scale Compactor**: Includes a compaction hammer, a flat round compaction head with a diameter of Φ149.5mm, and a guide bar with a handle (diameter 15.9mm). It is operated mechanically, falling from a height of 457.2mm ± 2.5mm. The large compaction hammer weighs 10210g ± 10g. - **Standard Compaction Table**: Designed to fix the test mode, it includes a wooden pier made of hardwood (Cyclobalanopsis glauca, pine, or similar), with a density of 0.67g/cm³ to 0.77g/cm³. The table supports both manual and mechanical compaction. - **Automatic Compactor**: Integrates the standard compaction hammer and table, driven electrically to compact the test piece continuously and count the compaction cycles automatically. The compaction speed is 60 ± 5 times per minute. The power of the large-scale compactor must be at least 250W. - **Laboratory Asphalt Mixture Mixer**: Ensures proper mixing temperature and time, with a capacity of at least 10L. The stirring leaf rotates at 70–80r/min, while the revolution speed is 40–50r/min. - **Mold Release Device**: Can be electric or manual, allowing for easy removal of cylindrical test pieces. It includes standard cylindrical molds and extrusion rings for large cylindrical specimens. - **Test Die and Sleeve**: Made of high carbon steel or tool steel. Each set includes a cylindrical metal cylinder with an inner diameter of 101.6mm ± 0.2mm and a height of 87mm, along with a base (diameter ~120.6mm) and a sleeve (inner diameter 101.6mm, height 70mm). - **Large Cylindrical Test Die and Sleeve**: As shown in diagram 2, the sleeve has an outer diameter of 165.1mm, an inner diameter of 155.6mm ± 0.3mm, and a total height of 83mm. The test die has a diameter of 152.4mm ± 0.2mm, a total height of 115mm, a base plate thickness of 12.7mm, and a diameter of 172mm. - **Oven**: One large and one medium oven, equipped with a temperature regulator. - **Balance or Electronic Scale**: Used for weighing mineral materials (sensitivity ≤ 0.5g) and asphalt (sensitivity ≤ 0.1g). - **Asphalt Kinematic Viscosity Measuring Equipment**: Includes capillary viscometers, Saybolt heavy oil viscometers, or Brookfield viscometers. - **Insert Knife or Large Screwdriver**: A basic tool used for sample preparation and handling.
