Low-voltage testers are commonly used as a safety tool by electricians to check whether conductors below 500V or equipment enclosures are energized. These devices are portable, easy to carry, and rely on the basic principles of electricity. With proper knowledge and practice, they can be used in various ways for troubleshooting and testing. (1) Distinguishing between AC and DC: A low-voltage tester lights up more brightly when used with AC than with DC. When testing AC, both ends of the neon tube glow, while with DC, only one end is bright. This helps identify the type of current being tested. (2) Identifying the polarity of DC: The brightness of the neon tube can indicate the positive and negative poles. If the tip of the pen glows brightly, it indicates the negative pole; if the back end glows, it’s the positive pole. This method works best when the voltage is above 110V. (3) Checking for open circuits in DC systems: If the tester doesn’t light up when touching both poles, it may indicate an open circuit. If the tip glows, the positive pole might be faulty; if the back end glows, the negative pole could be the issue. (4) Determining phase alignment: When testing two lines, if both glow equally, they are in the same phase. If only one glows, they are out of phase. This is useful for three-phase systems where insulation and safety must be maintained. (5) Detecting faults in 380/220V three-phase systems: In a Y-connected system, two lines should glow more brightly than the third. If one line is dim or barely visible, there may be a connection fault. If two lines are very bright and the third is not, a metal-to-metal short is likely. In case of an electric shock, immediate first aid is crucial. First, check if the person is conscious by gently tapping or calling them. If no response, check for breathing by observing chest movement, listening for breath sounds, and feeling for air flow. If breathing has stopped, begin CPR immediately and call for emergency help. Ensure the victim is placed on a firm surface, and clear the airway before starting resuscitation. Always prioritize safety and avoid any actions that could worsen the situation.
