iQiyi Releases Content Strategy for 2018: Content Investment Will Exceed 10 Billion

In the afternoon of October 31, Sina Technology reported that during today's 2017 iQiyi Yue Enjoyment Meeting, iQiyi unveiled its 2018 lineup of dramas, trending entertainment shows, and ecological content across multiple fields, revealing over 200 new projects. In a post-event interview, Wang Xiaohui, iQiyi’s Chief Content Officer, announced that the company’s content investment for 2018 will surpass 10 billion yuan, signaling a major expansion in creative production. One of the most anticipated projects is “The Hot Blood Dance Company,” created by the “China Hip-Hop” team. The show, produced by iQiyi and co-produced with Weibo, features Chen Wei as director, Liu Zhou as music director, Che Che as executive producer, and Tang Hao as visual director. Notable guests include Lu Wei and Chen Weijun, and the program is set to launch in March 2018. Additionally, the second season of “China Hip-Hop” will debut in July 2018. According to Wang Xiaohui, the investment in “The Hot Blood Dance Company” is expected to be similar to the first quarter of “China Hip-Hop,” which was reportedly around 250 million yuan. This suggests a significant financial commitment to the new dance-based variety show. iQiyi also revealed that “The Hot Blood Dance Company” and “Robot Hegemony” will be launched in the same quarter of 2018. When asked about potential competition, Wang Xiaohui expressed confidence, stating that it’s a positive sign when others enter the market, but emphasized that iQiyi’s early creativity and preparation give it an edge. In addition to expanding its content portfolio, iQiyi is integrating AI technology into its operations. Gong Yi, founder and CEO of iQiyi, highlighted how AI has improved efficiency and enhanced user experience. From scriptwriting to traffic forecasting, AI algorithms are used throughout the entire production and distribution process. For instance, iQiyi’s deep learning models have achieved an 83% accuracy rate in predicting box office performance for movies, and an 88% accuracy rate for TV dramas up to 18 months in advance. Wang Xiaohui also mentioned that the selection of Wu Yifan as a guest on “China Hip-Hop” was data-driven. Marketing efforts have also seen a boost, with iQiyi joining Baidu’s “One Hundred Love Plan.” This collaboration integrates Baidu’s AI technology, user data, and marketing platforms with iQiyi’s premium entertainment content. Looking ahead, 2018 will be a pivotal year for iQiyi, with key themes such as robotics, hip-hop, and street dance taking center stage. The second quarter of “China Hip-Hop” is set to feature exclusive sponsorships from Xiaomi and Mengniu, while “The Hot Blood Dance Company” will be backed by Vivo and PepsiCo. Another major project is “Robot Hegemony,” a S+ class variety show that combines human talent with robotic elements. Meanwhile, the fifth season of “Qiqi Shuo” will feature Ma Dong, Cai Kangyong, Gao Xiaosong, and a mysterious guest, and is scheduled to launch in September 2018. In total, iQiyi plans to release over 200 top-tier content pieces in 2018, spanning drama, entertainment, and ecological content. This includes nearly 80 dramas like “River God 2,” “Old Nine Gates 2,” and “Tomb Notes 2,” more than 50 high-profile programs such as “Idol Trainee,” and over 90 entertainment and lifestyle shows like “Spirit 6” and “Eternal Immortals 2.” Chen Wei, Senior Vice President of iQiyi, explained that the company operates through various studios, each with multiple director teams. He noted that while individual teams can produce content, collaboration across studios is essential in the era of super networks.
