Renesas Electronics and TTTech Partner to Launch a Highly Automated Driving Platform that Accelerates Mass Production

January 5, 2017, Tokyo, Austria, Vienna, Austria - Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723, Renesas Electronics), the world's leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, and TTTech Computertechnik AG, the world's leading provider of network and security controls (hereinafter referred to as "TTTech"), today announced the development of a highly automated driving platform (HADP). The new HADP is a prototype electronic control unit (ECU) that provides integrated software and tools for production vehicles that demonstrate how to use Renesas Electronics and TTTech's technology for autonomous driving in a real automotive environment. HADP accelerates the pace of mass production of TIer 1 and OEMs.

Renesas Electronics and TTTech's highly automated development platform

With the rapid development of the automotive market, by 2020, consumers can realize the dream of autonomous driving. Sensors are increasingly enriched with information, and their evaluation and consequent behavior requires high-performance hardware and software implementations that meet the highest security standards. In addition, a large number of sensors and features mean that software implementation and integration face new challenges.

The new HADP is the first collaboration between TTTech and Renesas Electronics in January 2016. It is an expanded version of the HAD solution suite released in October 2016. It is based on dual R-Car H3 system-on-chip (SoC) and RH850/P1H-C microcontroller (MCU).

HADP was developed based on the ASIL-D functional safety concept (Note 1). It provides ultra-efficient integration for complex, highly automated driving systems. TIer 1 and OEMs can use HADP to prototype their functions immediately in an embedded automotive ECU. HADP enables system developers to easily validate and integrate software with prototype ECUs that accelerate the mass production of cars, reducing time to market.

Jean-Francois Chouteau, vice president of Renesas Electronics' global ADAS Center, said: "As the automotive industry becomes more focused on autonomous driving, OEMs will play a key role in ensuring the safety and stability of innovative features. TTTech and Renesas Electronics offer HADP enables OEMs to significantly reduce development time and the time required to implement autonomous driving technology.

Dr. Stefan Poledna, Executive Director of TTTech, said: "We are pleased to be able to launch the first platform to be developed in cooperation with Renesas Electronics. Renesas Electronics is the world's leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, and TTTech is a mature provider of scalable safety ECU platforms. The perfect combination of experience and the perfect combination of the two allows customers to develop high-performance autonomous driving solutions faster.

The main features of HADP:

(1) Prototype ECU for speeding up production

The ECU has been developed for automotive sample quality and meets thermal design and impact resistance requirements. It is housed in an aluminum enclosure that is IP51 rated (Note 2) for installation in the passenger compartment or trunk. The HADP can be directly connected to the vehicle's power supply, operates at operating temperatures from -40 to +85 °C, and is subject to vibration in the moving car. HADP is equipped with cables and guides to easily adapt to the interior environment.

(2) Reduce time to market by introducing a software platform for simplified integration

TTIntegraTIon is a software platform for providing all services to run multiple security-critical applications in parallel on multiple system-on-a-chip. It has a complex partitioning concept that prevents security-related applications from being affected by other applications running at the same time.

Because the standard PC has a co-simulation environment, you can use the embedded HADP platform to develop functions while the PC is running the application. They can share the same data and services, just like a single-domain ECU.

The seamless integration and testing of all applications is significantly faster and more efficient than typical distributed solutions.

Supply

HADP and its technical support program were launched by TTTech in the second quarter of 2017.

For the main specifications of HADP, please refer to the specification sheet (PDF: 492 KB).

(Note 1) ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Level):

Each level specifies the requirements of the ISO 26262 functional safety standard and safety measures to avoid unacceptable residual risks. There are four security levels from A to D, of which ASIL-D is the most stringent. Renesas Electronics' RH850/P1HC MCU and TTIntegration software platforms are all ASIL-D functional safety grades. Renesas Electronics' R-Car H3 system-on-chip is ASIL-B rated.

(Note 2) The IP code is defined in the international standard IEC 60529. IP 51 stands for dust and water repellency protection.
