Volkswagen has long been recognized as a "bus" brand globally—not because it produces buses, but due to its strong market presence, including in the U.S. where it holds a significant share alongside GM. In China, however, Volkswagen still relies on 200,000 RMB-class models in the SUV segment, which lacks competitiveness against the 150,000 RMB luxury SUVs that have already entered the market.
This gap highlights the urgent need for a more affordable SUV to enter the Chinese market. The T-ROC, a small-volume SUV, has already been introduced overseas, but its official launch in China is expected only by the end of 2018. Before that, the T-Cross has already made an appearance, offering a glimpse into what’s coming.
The new T-Cross brings exciting news from SAIC Volkswagen. It will feature the design language of the T-Cross Breeze concept car. While it shares some similarities with the latest Tiguan, the new model takes a futuristic approach. The production version is set to include a sci-fi-style grille integrated with the headlights, giving the front a more dynamic and modern look. The sharp interior lines further enhance this futuristic feel.
Looking at the lower part of the design, the air intake features a mesh pattern that offers better flatness, while the silver sports bumper adds a modern touch. The square-shaped daytime running lights add a sci-fi element to the overall design. It's unclear whether these details will make it to the final production model, but they certainly create a strong visual impression.
Although some media have not given high praise to the rear of the new T-Cross, the design is far from outdated. The sharp lines are well-defined, and the horizontal T-shaped tail lights match the front design, creating a cohesive look. The mesh pattern on the rear also adds a unique touch, making it more modern than many domestic models.
Inside, the T-Cross continues Volkswagen’s trend of using electronic shifters across its lineup. The production model will feature an all-electronic gearshift, though physical buttons and controls will still be present. The central display is unlikely to be fully integrated with the dashboard, and the single or dual-tone color options will remain. If this model truly enters the Chinese market with a price around 120,000 RMB, it could pose a serious challenge to local brands.
