Volkswagen is widely recognized as a "bus" brand globally—not because it produces buses, but due to its strong market presence, especially in the U.S. where it holds a significant share alongside GM. In China, however, Volkswagen still relies on models priced around 200,000 yuan in the SUV segment, which lacks competitiveness against luxury models from Chinese brands that start at 150,000 yuan.
To address this gap, a compact SUV priced around 100,000 yuan is urgently needed in the Chinese market. While T-ROC's small-volume SUV has already been introduced overseas, its entry into China is expected to be delayed until late 2018. However, before T-ROC arrives, T-Cross has already made its mark.
The new T-Cross brings exciting news from SAIC Volkswagen. It will adopt the design language of the T-Cross Breeze concept car. Although it shares some similarities with the new Tiguan generation, it leans more towards futuristic and sci-fi aesthetics. The production model will feature an integrated sci-fi grille and headlights, with sharp interior lines that give the front a more dynamic look.
At the lower part of the design, the air intake uses a mesh pattern that enhances the vehicle’s flatness. A modern silver sports bumper and square-shaped daytime running lights add a sci-fi touch. Whether these details will make it to the final production model remains uncertain.
While many media outlets have not praised the rear design of the new T-Cross, it’s actually quite bold. The sharp lines are well-defined, and the horizontal T-shaped taillights match the front design. The mesh-style rear panel is particularly impressive and less conservative than many domestic models.
Inside, electronic gearshifts are standard across all Volkswagen models. The T-Cross production version also adopts an all-electronic shift system. However, physical buttons and controls will still be present. The central control interface is unlikely to feature a highly integrated touchscreen, and the design will retain single or dual-tone color options. If this car truly enters the Chinese market with a price tag around 120,000 yuan, it could pose a serious challenge to local brands.
